Tykes Teaching School Alliance is proud to work partnership with Sheffield Hallam University to deliver the Schools Direct route into teaching. On successful completion of the course you would be awarded QTS, PGCE, comprising 60 credits at Master Level 6.

Sheffield Hallam’s ‘The Sheffield Institute of Education’ (SIoE) received the first ever ‘Outstanding’ rating from Ofsted for early years’ teacher training – alongside an ‘Outstanding’ rating for their primary teacher training. They are a national centre of education, recognised for their excellence and innovation in teaching and learning.

Tykes TSA students are placed in two highly performing Barnsley primary schools, and are mentored by good and outstanding teachers. Students experience all aspects of school life during their placements, which is invaluable when applying for future teaching positions.

Tykes TSA provides a schedule of Network Meetings so students can visit a wide variety of primary schools, share good practice ideas and students can offer support to each other.

We plan a number of Enrichment Training sessions delivered by handpicked, high quality, experienced Specialist Leaders of Education (the best teachers who are still teaching!) in Barnsley to ensure our students are fully equipped to enter the teaching profession. We work with small cohorts and so our training is tailored to meet the needs of individuals.

Entry requirement for the course are a 2:2 degree, along with GCSE maths, English and science at grade C or equivalent.

If you are looking to gain school experience to support your Initial Teacher Training Application Tykes TSA also facilitates School Experience Days at Hoyland Common Primary School. You can book School Experience via this link https://getintoteaching.education.gov.uk/school-experience
