Work discussion groups are practice-based workshops that use participants’ observations of their work to develop observational skills and further understanding of the vulnerable children and young people they are working with. These include for example the conscious and unconscious communications of children and young people and their internal emotional states, and how these may impact on others around them and contribute to and shape their presentation within the school or academy.
Work discussion groups run for one hour and fifteen minutes, on the same day at the same time at a regular interval. In each group a participant will present an observational account of their work. Wherever possible this will be written up in an observational style of an exchange, situation or event. It will be a detailed sequential account of what happened with a specific child or young person.
The work discussion group provides a rich opportunity to explore and consider the dynamics arising in children and young people being worked with.
